Attention deficit disorder (ADD), also known as attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is a common condition that affects many school-age children and adults. There are two main subtypes of ADD and ADHD: the hyperactive subtype and the inattentive subtype. Some individuals may display characteristics of both subtypes.
Research studies using EEGs and MRIs have shown differences in brain activity between individuals with ADD and ADHD and those without. ADD and ADHD is not a result of poor behavior, laziness, or inadequate parenting. Rather, it is a condition in which certain parts of the brain, such as the prefrontal cortex, may develop more slowly than expected. This delay in development can result in a child's behavior resembling that of a younger child, making it difficult for them to meet the standards set for their age group.
ADD and ADHD is diagnosed by our trained clinicians using standardized tests completed by family members, teachers, or co-workers. Those who meet the diagnostic criteria may receive treatment through behavioral counseling or medication.
